Music I identify with is typically considered singer songwriter stuff. Kassem refers to my genre as "Robert Baird Music" but I prefer to think of it as emotionally honest music that grounds the soul.
Live music is definitely my bag. Anything from Chamber Music at The Shepherd School of Music, Rice University - Houston to The Black Crowes, Robert Randolph & the Family Band and The Drive By Truckers at Red Rocks – Colorado. I have been blessed to be in attendance at hundreds of shows at such intimate venues as Blue Heaven Studios – Salina, McGonigel's Mucky Duck – Houston and Cactus Café – Austin. It is in these types of venues that I can really capture the essence of the performer(s) and their message.
An audio system at home is a unique instrument. While I appreciate dearly all of the technical aspects of its performance and technology, ultimately its about the synergy of how the components convey the true emotion of the music. This is why I listen – to ground my emotions and recharge my batteries.
Systems that I typically enjoy listening to at the store comprise of Sutherland and/or Manley Electronics, the latest turntable that I've set-up with a pair of British loudspeakers sporting soft dome tweeters. This makes music for me!
My soapbox: When I'm not in my music/audio world, I'm usually following my passion for sports car racing or finding out about the latest news from Volkswagen and Audi. I'm a huge Audi fan and am still recovering financially from rebuilding my 1987.5 Coupe GT. It was one of the white ones that rewarded me with 263,000 miles of pure joy. After essentially paying for the car a second time with a killer rebuild, I had to send her off. I've also got fond memories of thrashing exotic Ferraris at Texas World Speedway. The nice thing about Audi's, and it's a bit like great Hi-Fi, and that is; you don't get tired running the crap out of them. Pure quality that goes to work for you. On a race track, give me BMW or Ferrari, in the real world there is only Audi. By the way, I'm driving an '04 TDI Jetta! Also, Karting rules!!
My other interests include dysfunctional relationships with wonderful women, Mountain Biking and just being outside. I truly adore all of my unique and numerous friends and consider myself to be one lucky dude to be blessed with so many. Florescent lighting and air-conditioning kill!!!
